ScanToPlan — Frequently Asked Questions

Device requirements, accuracy, export formats, and how your scan data is handled.

What does ScanToPlan do?
ScanToPlan uses the LiDAR scanner built into recent iPhone and iPad models to measure a room and generate a 2D floor plan from it. You walk slowly around the space with the camera pointed at the walls, tap done, and the app produces a scaled floor plan with walls, doors, and windows that you can review, adjust, and export as a PDF, image, or CAD file.
Which iPhones and iPads work with ScanToPlan?
ScanToPlan requires a device with a LiDAR scanner: iPhone 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro, 16 Pro or later, and iPad Pro from 2020 or later. iOS or iPadOS 17 is the minimum. On a device without LiDAR, the app cannot scan — the hardware is what makes the measurements accurate.
How accurate are ScanToPlan's measurements?
LiDAR scanning is dramatically more accurate than sketching a room by hand, and for typical rooms it lands within a few percent of a tape measure. Accuracy depends on conditions: good lighting, slow and steady movement, and full coverage of every wall and corner give the best results. Large open spaces, mirrors, glass, and dark surfaces are harder for any depth sensor, so it's worth spot-checking critical dimensions — and you can type in an exact measurement for any wall if you have one.
What formats can I export a floor plan to?
Four: PDF (US Letter, with the plan, a generated-on date, and a room area table), PNG and JPEG at 300 DPI, and DXF for CAD and design tools like AutoCAD and SketchUp. Exports are handed to the standard iOS share sheet, so you can save them to Files, email them, AirDrop them, or send them to any other app.
Does ScanToPlan need an internet connection?
No. ScanToPlan makes no network requests at all. Scanning, plan generation, rendering, and PDF/PNG/JPEG/DXF export all happen on your device. There is no account to create, no login, and no server involved — the app works in airplane mode, in a basement, or on a job site with no signal.
Does ScanToPlan collect or upload my scans?
No. Your scans and floor plans are stored only on your device. ScanToPlan contains no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no third-party SDKs of any kind. Nothing is uploaded to us, and we have no ability to see your projects. A floor plan leaves your device only when you deliberately share or export it yourself.
Why does ScanToPlan ask for camera access?
Scanning uses the camera together with the LiDAR sensor to understand the shape of the room — that's how the floor plan gets made. The camera feed is processed live on your device and is not recorded, saved as photos or video, or transmitted anywhere. If you deny camera access, scanning cannot work. ScanToPlan does not request access to your photo library.
Can I edit the floor plan after scanning?
Yes. In the editor you can drag wall endpoints or whole walls to correct the shape, split a wall at its midpoint, delete a wall, convert an opening between a door, window, and passageway, toggle a door's swing direction, type an exact dimension for any wall, rename the room, and switch between the 2D plan and a 3D view. Export your plan before you leave the editor — the scan and the generated plan are saved to the project, but manual edits in the editor are not yet carried over between sessions.
How do I scan a whole house or multiple rooms?
Create one project for the property, then scan each room into it. Each scan is saved as its own floor plan inside that project, so a three-bedroom house becomes one project with a plan per room, and you can export each one individually. Scan one room at a time for the most reliable results.
Can I switch between feet and meters?
Yes. Settings has a unit toggle for Imperial (ft, in) or Metric (m, cm). It applies to the dimensions shown on your plans and to the room area table in exported PDFs.
