How to Use ScanToPlan

Step-by-step instructions for scanning a room and exporting a floor plan.

Check Your Device

ScanToPlan requires a LiDAR scanner — iPhone 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro, 16 Pro or later, or an iPad Pro from 2020 or later, running iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. If your device has no LiDAR scanner, the app will tell you on launch and scanning will not be available. The hardware is what makes the measurements accurate, so there’s no software substitute.

Allow Camera Access

The first time you start a scan, iOS asks for camera access. ScanToPlan needs it to measure the room — the camera works together with the LiDAR sensor to detect walls, doors, and windows. The feed is processed entirely on your device and nothing is recorded as photos or video.

Create a Project

Tap the + button on the project list, give the project a name such as the property address, and tap Create. A project holds all the floor plans for one property. You can rename it later at any time.

Start a Scan

Open the project and tap Start Scanning, then choose Scan Rooms. Stand near the middle of the room or just inside the doorway so you have a clear view of the walls before you begin.

Walk the Room

Move slowly around the room with the device held upright and the camera pointed at the walls.

  • Cover every wall and corner, including behind doors and into alcoves
  • Watch the on-screen hints — they tell you to move closer, back up, slow down, or turn on a light
  • Good, even lighting makes a noticeable difference
  • Mirrors, large windows, and glass walls are hard for any depth sensor; scan them slowly and verify those dimensions afterward

Finish the Scan

When the room is fully covered, tap the green checkmark button to finish.

If the device gets warm, a banner appears and accuracy may drop — step out and let it cool before scanning again. If storage runs low, ScanToPlan warns you so you can free up space before scan data is lost.

Let the Plan Generate

ScanToPlan processes the scan on your device and builds the floor plan, showing its progress as it filters geometry, extracts walls, detects openings, and calculates measurements. This takes seconds.

If not enough of the room was captured, ScanToPlan tells you and offers to let you scan again. Walk the full perimeter more slowly on the second pass.

Review the Floor Plan

The editor opens with your scaled plan, dimensions on each wall, and the doors and windows it detected.

  • Pinch to zoom in and out
  • Drag with one finger to pan around
  • Double-tap empty space to fit the whole plan on screen

Correct the Walls

Tap a wall or a wall endpoint to select it, then drag to correct the shape. Press and hold a wall for more options:

  • Delete Wall — remove a wall that shouldn’t be there
  • Split at Midpoint — break one wall into two so you can create or move a corner

Undo and redo in the toolbar cover every edit you make.

Fix Doors and Windows

Press and hold an opening in a wall to:

  • Convert To a door, window, or passageway if it was identified as the wrong type
  • Toggle Swing to flip the direction a door opens
  • Delete Opening if it was detected in error

Set an Exact Dimension

Double-tap any wall to type in an exact measurement — for example 10'6" — when you already know the true dimension. The plan adjusts to match what you entered. This is the fastest way to reconcile a scan with a measurement you trust.

Name the Room

Tap the pencil icon in the toolbar to rename the room from the default Room 1 to something meaningful, like Primary Bedroom or Kitchen. The name appears on the plan and in every export.

View It in 3D

Use the 2D/3D toggle in the toolbar to see the room as extruded walls with door and window openings cut out. It’s a quick way to sanity-check that the scan matches the real space.

Export Your Plan

Tap the share icon and choose a format:

  • PDF Document — US Letter page with the plan, a room area table, and the generation date
  • PNG Image — 300 DPI, good for documents and listings
  • JPEG Image — 300 DPI, smaller files for email
  • DXF — CAD Drawing — layered vector geometry for AutoCAD, SketchUp, and other design tools

The iOS share sheet opens so you can save the file to Files, email it, AirDrop it, or send it to another app.

Export before you navigate away. Your scan and the generated plan are saved to the project automatically, but manual corrections made in the editor aren’t yet carried over between sessions — so finish your edits and export in one sitting.

Add More Rooms

Return to the project and tap + to scan the next room. Each scan is saved as its own floor plan inside the project, so a whole house becomes one project with a plan per room. Scan one room at a time for the most reliable results.

Switch Units

Open Settings from the gear icon on the project list and choose Imperial (ft, in) or Metric (m, cm). This changes the dimensions shown on your plans and the room area table in exported PDFs.

Reclaim Storage

In Settings → Manage Storage, you can see how much space each project’s raw scan data uses. Clean Up removes that scan data while keeping your finished floor plans.

Delete a Project

Swipe a project in the list, or press and hold it, and choose Delete. This permanently removes the project and all of its scans and floor plans from your device. It cannot be undone.
